Broad College Focused on Study Abroad

If you watch MSU athletic events on television, you've probably noticed the half-time promotional pieces focusing on Study Abroad. Four years ago, President Peter McPherson identified Study Abroad as a valuable component of an MSU education, and established a goal of dramatically increasing our students' involvement in these experiences. As a result of the Study Abroad initiative, both the number of Study Abroad programs and the level of student participation have grown dramatically. The promotional pieces on television describe MSU as a "national leader" in Study Abroad. During the 1997-98 school year (the latest year for which national figures are available), 1454 MSU students studied abroad - more than any other university in the country - and participation continues to grow. This year, over 1800 MSU students will study abroad in locations all around the world. The Broad College has been a major player in the Study Abroad initiative. In the past three years, Study Abroad participation by MSU business students has increased fourfold, to nearly 280 students last year. We now offer more than 20 Study Abroad programs in which business students can take courses toward their graduation requirements. The next important phase of this initiative in the Broad College is to structure course offerings abroad so that they integrate more cleanly with the on-campus curriculum. Our goal is to build programs that will make it possible for any undergraduate business student to fit a semester-long Study Abroad experience seamlessly into his/her degree program.
