From the Executive Director CIBER at Michigan State University has had a prolific and productive agenda this past academic year. We have been engaged in a variety of Faculty Development in International Business Programs (FDIBs) and a number of co-sponsored events, including a presentation at the Annual Meeting of the AACSB on the internationalization of business education.We are serving as the program planning team for the 2000 Annual Meeting of the Academy of International Business. This meeting will be held on 17-20 of November 2000 in Phoenix, Arizona at the Tapatio Cliffs Pointe Hilton Resort. We received a record number of manuscript selections and a large number of proposals for special sessions. The conference is likely to be the best ever for the AIB, and will bring together both educators and practictioners in international business. The theme this year is, “In Search of Relevance for International Business Research: Impact on Management and Public Policy.” In the planning for September 2001 is the third in the MSU-CIBER series of roundtables on internationalizing business education. The focus of this invitational conference will be study abroad programs. We have secured the participation and co-sponsorship of a large number of CIBERs for this event. Planning and implementing this major event with us will be the CIBERs at Duke University, Purdue University, San Diego University, Texas A&M University, University of Connecticut, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Kansas, University of Memphis, University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Wisconsin. The annual meeting of the MSU-CIBER Advisory Council was held 31 of March 2000, and many of our external members were present. These members included Nat Adamson, Ford Motor Company, Sandy Beall, IBM Corporation, Janet Clark, International & National Business Development for the State of Michigan, Shahriar Ghoddousi, The John Henry Company, Norman Gilbert, The Budd Company, John Hornick, Upjohn Company, Vicky Jones, GM University, Senator Don Riegle, Shandwick Public Affairs, Marc Santucci, ELM International, and Trygve Vigmostad, Christman Company. There was a discussion on internet-mediated distance education in international business. Indeed, our major focus this past year has been the development of web-based course in international business, along with the development of a course-delivery platform. These efforts have culminated in the creation of the Virtual International Business Academy (VIBA). VIBA now serves as the platform to deliver these courses to both campus-based and distant participants. It offers many interactive features for the user as well as the instructor. Our vision is that VIBA will serve as a virtual community of international business learners who use this one-stop resource center for lifelong learning. VIBA incorporates not only traditional courses but short modules, readings and publications, a help desk for the international business professional, and discussion groups. Many of the courses that have been developed have already been used by campus-based students here at MSU. In addition, Professor Stewart Miller just completed a short course for a group of executive MBA students enrolled at the International University in Geneva, Switzerland. Both types of students have expressed great satisfaction and praise for the platform web learning. We look forward to a productive summer full of activities.
