MSU-CIBER

MSU-CIBER Annual Advisory Board Meeting

On 31 March 2000, the CIBER Advisory Board, comprised of members of the business, government and education communities, met to discuss CIBER’s activities.

MSU educators Stewart Miller and G. Geoffrey Booth gave brief presentations on their research efforts in international business. Pat Paulsell, Director of Business Language Initiatives for CIBER and Professor of Linguistics and Languages, talked about some of the activities she had been involved in over the year including the development of a business language CD-ROM for Business Chinese. She hoped that this will be used as a template to develop introductory business language software in other key languages in the future. Gary Ragatz, Director of the International Business Center, discussed study abroad opportunities in the College of Business and the increased popularity of these programs. He talked about the need for more financial aid to allow greater participation in these programs. Many of the board members commented that they looked for this kind of experience when hiring new employees. There was also a presentation by John Hudzik, Dean of International Studies and Programs on the “Global Michigan:” intiative. This initiative involves a number of activities including a website, workshops, and other international resources linking academic research with contact information for use by the business community. Dean Hudzik hoped to get a small group of executives together to brainstorm what their requirements and desires might be. Some of the board members volunteered to be part of this group. Lastly, the Virtual International Business Academy (VIBA) was presented. There was a lot of interest from the group and some suggestions were made as to how VIBA could serve its customers successfully.

The next annual meeting of the CIBER Advisory Board will be held on 23 March 2001.
