Visiting Scholar at MSU

Dr. Kursat Aydogan, a professor of comparative finance and investment at Bilkent University, is a visiting professor at MSU this semester. While here, he is teaching two classes, one undergraduate course dealing with international finance, and a graduate course titled, "Introduction to Investments." Dr. Aydogan will be in East Lansing through the summer.

Dr. Aydogan’s experience with MSU began when a team of MSU faculty members traveled to Bilkent University to propose a faculty and student exchange program. As a member of the newly-formed program, Dr. Aydogan’s duties include his courses and acting as a member of a dissertation committee. Of his experience, Dr. Aydogan comments, "Since my arrival in January, I have experienced nice things from everyone I’ve encountered - faculty, staff and students."

In Turkey, Dr. Aydogan’s research has included topics like investments, corporate finance and international finance. He has been published in many journals, and has conducted research with MSU faculty member Dr. Geoffrey Booth.

As an individual with teaching experience in both the U.S. and Turkey, Dr. Aydogan comments on the similarities of the student bodies in both countries. The only major distinction he notes is at the MBA level, as MSU has a requirement of four years of business experience, whereas in Turkey, students come into the MBA program right out of their undergraduate programs.

At MSU, Dr. Aydogan has been comparing teaching techniques, experiences and policies with MSU faculty, and has found many similarities, including test score averages, which tend to be fairly consistent.

Dr. Aydogan strongly encourages student participation in study abroad programs, stating, "It will open up your perspective and make you a different person. MSU has invested heavily in the program, so take advantage of it."

As a final note, Dr. Aydogan noted that he received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University. Though his opinion on the winner of the MSU/Syracuse Sweet Sixteen game in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament was mixed, he noted, "No matter who won, I was happy!"
