Hong Kong Programs Grows in Popularity One of the new and popular study abroad programs in The Eli Broad College of Business is the Hong Kong China program, in which MSU students are allowed the opportunity to study at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology for either the spring or fall semester. The university is located on the Clar Water Bay peninsula. The beauty of its architecture often overwhelmes visitors. The man responsible for the maintenance of this program is Dr. Robert Nason, Chairperson of the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management. After teaching for several years at both the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Nason taught for a semester at Chulalongkorn University as a result of a program established by Northwestern University and the University of Pennsylvania.
When he assumed the position of chairperson, Dr. Nason inherited a study abroad program in the Netherlands. Several years ago, Dr. Nason was approached to institute the Hong Kong program. As it exists, a two-way exchange of students occurs every semester, with four students from each university participating."The Hong Kong program is really increasing in popularity. This year alone, we received ten applications for the four spots." Dr. Nason attributes that popularity to the students who have returned from this experience and spread the word. Hong Kong is a wonderful place for students to visit for several reasons. First, the primary language is english, allowing students to experience an Asian economy in their native tongue. Second, Hong Kong is half Western and half Asian. Its Western characteristics include the court system, the business culture, and low corruption, while its Asian half is marked by a homogenous Chinese population, and cultural behaviors including the prominence of the family. As a personal consideration, Dr. Nason has a unique contact with the faculty of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology: his son, a professor of management. Dr. Nason reports, "The founders of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology first built a beautiful and modern campus. Then they recruited the best and brightest professors from around the world." Copyright © 2000 Michigan State University. |
