Visiting Scholar at MSU

Professor Duncan Paulson, a faculty member at the University of Tasmania in Australia, is visiting MSU to conduct research regarding international business. MSU’s reputation for international business research first brought him in 1996.

Mr. Duncan Paulson Currently, Professor Paulson is conducting two research projects. The first is in conjunction with S. Tamer Cavusgil in the Department of Marketing. It examines the legal aspects of international electronic commerce.

The second is being conducted through MSU, the University of Tasmania, and Zhejiang University in China. Professor Paulson is working with Georgia Chao in the School of Management. This particular piece looks at multicultural factors in international joint ventures in the Asian-Pacific region.

"There is a need for the application of a great deal of education and skill. Universities like Michigan State have recognized that need and are leading the world in research and programs."
According to Professor Paulson, the largest challenge for U.S. and Australian businesses in Asia is not economic or commercial, rather intellectual and cultural. His research examines the role of training in Asian culture and language. The importance of Asia in the business world has been recognized, but the U.S. and Australian governments have not given their workforces the training needed to succeed.

In the past, U.S. and Australian businesses in Asia have been successful, but Mr. Paulson argues that the success was based on demand for products, not perseverence. The demand is no longer as great, and U.S. and Australian companies now need cultural knowledge if they wish to succeed.

The excitement that has marked U.S. and Australian companies’ entrance into Asia has now been met with equal cynicism due to the difficulties these companies found. Professor Paulson did indicate that while the U.S. and Australian governments have been lazy in training workers to be successful in Asia, MSU has been a leader in progress.

We welcome Duncan back to Michigan State University and wish him the best of luck in his research.
