International Business Forum Explores "Opportunities to Do Business in India"

Dr. Pysarchik On November 9, the International Business Forum welcomed speaker Dawn Pysarchik who addressed the monthly luncheon audience about, "Opportunities to Do Business in India."

Prof. Pysarchik is a faculty member in the Department of Human Environment and Design at MSU where she conducts comparative distribution system and consumer market development research, primarily on India. Dawn has done extensive international business research in marketing and distribution systems in India for several years. Her primary teaching subjects are international buying and product development.

Prof. Pysarchik began her presentation by giving an overview of India and its many contrasts. She spoke about India’s large population, diverse number of languages, well-educated and affluent upper class, and the growing lower and middle classes. Prof. Pysarchik said that India is becoming a large emerging market because of its population, strong resource and economic base, and its rapid growth in both the global and domestic production areas.

During the early 1990s, India was on the verge of bankruptcy. Resources, research and development have been invested in the infrastructure to create a global player. Recent economic, political and social reforms have greatly increased access to the Indian consumer market. India is the largest producer and exporter of black tea in the world. Other strong industries include rice and grain, bakery goods, fruits and vegetables, soft drinks, and beer and other alcoholic beverages.

Dawn concluded her presentation by offering the following thoughts about creating a successful venture into India:

  • Enter India with a long-term commitment.
  • Be prepared for India’s complex legal system.
  • Participate in trade shows.
  • Don’t underestimate the importance of rural markets. They currently compose about 70% of the total market.
  • Be patient and flexible.
  • Gain cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity.
  • Expand your understanding of India’s diversity.
  • Seek out joint ventures and strategic alliances.
