December International Business Forum Presentation Emphasizes Gerber’s Global Strategies

Mr. Jack ButterickAt the December 14th International Business Forum Luncheon, Jack Butterick, Director of Human Resources for the Latin America Novartis Consumer Health Group for Gerber Products Company, was the guest speaker. Mr. Butterick talked about the Gerber Company’s global operations and the changing environment in global business. He emphasized that due to the changing tariffs, regulations, and fast-paces technological advancements, including e-Commerce and EDI (Electronic Data Interface), global trade and operations of multinational companies will not be the same in the future.

Mr. Butterick explained that the baby food industry is a highly responsible and emotional business. He said that the quality of the products put into baby food is more crucial than other food products. In order to deliver the best products to the consumers, Gerber feels that quality needs to be monitored in every step of the supply chain from selection of the fruits and vegetables to the storage of finished products on retailer’s shelves.

Gerber products are sold in various countries which have substantial cultural differences. Although there are several values they market to, there are common values and needs that Gerber products target. Mr. Butterick said, "Babies are the most important human beings for mothers all over the world, and all mother want to provide the best that they can afford."

Mr. Butterick also talked about the importance of the emereging markets in keeping sales and margins high for Gerber. "This is one of the most important proft engines in Novartis." Mr. Butterick ended his presentation by suggesting that companies who want to be successful in the baby food business need to do two things in the future. They need to access new markets and develop the right combination of a product portfolio looking at eating habits, governmental regulations, pricing, sales potential, and climate.
