MSU Faculty Attend Conference in Berlin

The Strategic Management Society Conference is an international conference for scholars, practitioners, and consultants associated with strategic planning. This year, the conference theme was the deconstruction of industries and competitive environments. Over 600 professionals from around the world attended the conference.

MSU sent two faculty members, Robert Wiseman and Gerry McNamara. They co-authored a paper on the influence that stock options for executives have on the company’s investment in risky behaviors, such as R&D and capital expenditures. The findings, that increasing unexercised value of options affects the risk propensity of organizations, challenge traditional views of these options. A discussion of the determinants and consequences of risk taking and uncertainty management followed the presentation.

Prof. Wiseman presented another paper examining a group of unique strategic alliances between government and entrepreneurs in southern Italy. This paper looked at how different forms of governance influenced the actions taken by entrepreneurs and how these actions influenced their business performance. The results support a view that positive and negative control features of the governance design both influenced the entrepreneur’s perception of performance as well as the entrepreneur’s behavior and performance.
