CIBER Grant Funds Trip to Helsinki Recently, a CIBER grant funded a trip to Helsinki to explore the possibilities for exchange and study abroad programs. Elizabeth Booth, an Academic Specialist here at Michigan State University explored study abroad linkage possibilities with several Finnish universities. The Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration (HSEBA) presented several intriguing opportunities. First, they are confident that an active exchange could be established within the next five years. Second, the Director of the school expressed interest in sending upperclassmen with advanced degrees to take MBA classes. In return, MSU students could be exposed to a weekly seminar held with Nokia that deals with telecommunications issues or an intensive two-week seminar in St. Petersburg. Ms. Booth then traveled to the University of Oulu where she met with faculty and administrators. The University of Oulu is interested in setting up an exchange program, but does not currently offer any business courses in English, a fact which they hope to change within the next few years. Thus, any agreement would foster a one-way flow of students to MSU at this time. Further negotiations will continue this fall to see what exchanges and study abroad programs can be set up in the future. Copyright © 1999 Michigan State University. |
