higher education institutions
In today’s global market place, competition is continuing to become evermore intense. To help businesses better compete in this type of environment and allow business students to learn about different approaches for global expansion through hands-on experience, a team of researchers at the MSU-CIBER located in the Eli Broad Graduate School of Management at Michigan State University (and partially funded by the United States Department of Education) has developed a suite of decision support tools.

These tools tailor outputs with descriptive graphics, charts and specific business recommendations addressing your needs based on your inputs. To provide this customized feedback, the web-based tools use algorithms to provide you with the best solution for your situation. Your own private consultant is only a few keystrokes away!

Since the main premise of the Diagnostic Tools is to facilitate learning and increasing awareness about conducting business in a global environment, this suite of tools is an excellent utensil for training purposes. The two primary audiences who can benefit are higher education institutions and other business-training providers, such as export assistance agencies. The tools have been used to facilitate case study analyses and of additional educational value for students is acting as consultants for local businesses through a community outreach program. The firm benefits from innovative business solutions and the students gain invaluable work experience; as well as class credit. A truly win-win situation! Some examples of how the Diagnostic Tools have been used, in a nonacademic setting, are:

Government/Consulting Agencies:
Developing government policies
Preparing other businesses for expansion into foreign markets
Establishing best practices and aiding training programs
Business:
Gauging the organization’s global competitiveness
Exploring the compatibility of international venture partners
Establishing the ability to leverage resources when dealing
with freight forwarders and distributors

Should you wish to use any of the tools to locate opportunities for your business to expand, annual licensing is available that provides you access to individual modules and/or the entire suite. If you are a registered user more information on the subscription process, pricing, and educational discounts can be found on our subscription page.

The Diagnostic Tools that have been developed are CORE™, PARTNER™, DISTRIBUTOR™, FREIGHT™, and GLOBE™. A description on the focus of each module is provided below.

CORE™

CORE™ is a self-assessment tool that will allow you to determine your company's readiness to expand its operations internationally and ascertain its ability to export a particular product. Upon completion of the questionnaire you will be able to systematically and objectively identify your company's strengths and weaknesses concerning exporting. CORE™ generates answers (based on your responses) and then places them on two independent dimensions of readiness; "Organizational Readiness" and "Product Readiness." At the end of each session, results are presented in a comprehensive, easy to read format and can be compared with past work sessions.

Partner™

Partner™ is an interactive tool that will assist you in evaluating and comparing a variety of potential international venture partners (also known as strategic alliances, collaborative ventures, and coalitions). This tool highlights critical factors that need to be considered when finding the most suitable candidate for your organization. Partner™ is useful for, but by no means limited to, companies new to international partnerships. The tool can also be used in the reevaluation of your existing relationships. Prospective partners (or existing ones) are assessed on preferred partner-related and task-related criteria.

Distributor™

Distributor™ is designed to aid your company in identifying the best distributor or agent to use specific to your product and market characteristics when opening up to new markets. One of the principal advantages of using intermediaries, such as a distributor, is their ability to penetrate foreign markets without you directly getting involved in all the complexities and risks of exporting. This tool uses criteria such as the distributor's commitment to your business, financial strength, marketing skills, and product-related factors to evaluate each candidate. Upon completion of the work-session, agent's strengths and weaknesses are identified. In addition, you can compare distributors side-by-side.

Freight™

Freight™ evaluates the compatibility of international freight forwarders with your business. The tool assists you with the selection of the most appropriate candidate for your type and volume of freighting needs. Using six criteria the module highlights strengths and weaknesses of the forwarder and then makes recommendations on why (or why not) to choose the potential candidate. Freight™ has been designed for groups including export assistant agencies, exporters exploring alternative international freight forwarders, members of the International Federation of Freight Forwarders Association, and as an educational tool.

GLOBE™

GLOBE™ will provide a globalization benchmark of your organization's operations (i.e., the degree of globalization potential of the organization). This diagnostic tool is structured with the assumption that there are many factors that contribute to a company's degree of international expansion (including strategy, organizational structure, business culture, and management processes). While GLOBE™ is not an exhaustive checklist of questions and statements, the questionnaire should be used to encourage discussions on where and how to start or continue your company's international growth.
